TAAN Celebrates One Year and Is a Global Portal Today!

Image
On December 11, 2011, The African American Network (TAAN) began testing the waters to see if there was an interest and a market for news that affected African Americans, both locally and globally.  We started out by writing about some critical areas that affect African American like literacy, child molestation, job creation and recreation; prison and slavery of African American men, Christmas Shopping and the list goes on. We found that the interest of the topics published on our blog were far reaching and had a global interest...what started out as a blog about San Antonio, Texas has become a worldwide portal for information about education, children, business leaders, ordinary people, politics, community and more. As we move into another holiday season and another year...we cherish the memories and accomplishments of ordinary, yet extraordinary people in communities across the country. We've only chipped a tiny tip of the iceberg...there are so many stories of interest to

SANDUSKY TAKEN OFF THE STREETS FOR LIFE...

Image
S OURCE:  NEW YORK TIMES BELLEFONTE, Pa. —   Jerry Sandusky  stood in court Tuesday in his current uniform, the bright red jumpsuit of the Centre County jail. No longer was he in his  Penn State  coaching gear, nor in the suit and tie he wore at his trial in June. He was, in a sense, as powerless before his victims as they had once been before him. So he sat, forced to listen. “We both know exactly what happened,” said one of three victims who stood and spoke. Another said: “I am troubled with flashbacks of his naked body, something that will never be erased from my memory. Jerry has harmed children, of which I am one of them.”  “There is no punishment sufficient for you,” the mother of another victim wrote in a statement read by the lead prosecutor. Another victim wrote: “There is no remorse. There is no acknowledgment of regret, only evil.” The Penn State sexual abuse scandal does not have many chapters left. The former football coach Joe Paterno is dead, his name

MARTA board votes for Keith Parker as general manager

Image
By  Steve Visser The Atlanta Journal-Constitution The MARTA board of directors picked a rising transit “star” with a reputation for  working  with Republicans as the general manager Thursday to revamp the troubled transit authority. Board Chairman Fred Daniels said the board would be negotiating a contract with Keith Parker, who is  currently  the chief of VIA Metropolitan Transit in San Antonio. Daniels noted that Parker was coming from a politically conservative area. He hoped that would serve Parker well in negotiations with Georgia’s GOP-dominated Legislature, which provides no funding for MARTA, if the Legislature “gives him a chance.” “He has worked well with both the  business  community and the political community,” Daniels said. “He has a track record in San Antonio of working with both Republicans and Democrats. Same thing in Charlotte.” Almost immediately after news of Parker’s selection broke in Atlanta, the San Antonio Express-News reported on its website th

Keith Parker...VIA Metropolitan Transit CEO...Atlanta Bound?

Image
VIA's President and CEO  Keith Parker  was selected Thursday night to lead Atlanta's public transit agency, the ninth largest in the nation and one showing signs of trouble. Parker did not immediately accept the job and plans to meet with the  VIA Board of Trustees  at a special meeting early next week to discuss it, according to an email sent to the board shortly after the vote in Atlanta. The board of the  Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority  met and cast nine votes in favor of naming Parker general manager and CEO; one member abstained and another didn't attend, said spokesman  Lyle V. Harris . “We strongly believe that Keith Parker is the best choice for MARTA,” said  MARTA board  Chairman Frederick  L. Daniels  Jr. in a statement Thursday. “We are extremely proud of the  work  we have done to this point, and we are very confident that we have picked the right man, for the right job at the right time.” After learning of Parker's selection, VIA

DOES MICHELLE OBAMA'S OUTFITS...FIT IN?...SEE WHAT SOME THINK...

Image
Since she became First Lady of the United States,  Michelle Obama's fashion choices have been closely scrutinized and debated. But while we've argued the merits of mixed prints ,  kitten heels  and other style minutiae, we never once doubted that First Lady  Michelle Obama  looked the part. But in an interview last month, conducted at the American Legion's annual meeting in Indianapolis,  Virginia voter Bobbie Lussier expressed her concerns to NPR's Ari Shapiro  with the Obamas -- specifically, Mrs. O's appearance: I just -- I don't like him. Can't stand to look at him. I don't like his wife. She's far from the first lady. It's about time we get a first lady in there that acts like a first lady, and looks like a first lady. Shapiro happened to run into Lussier just yesterday  at another Romney event, this time in Springfield, Virginia, allowing Lussier to clarify her previous comments. Shapiro probed Lussier, saying that last time "
