The sister of Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd is asking San Antonians not to rush to judgment after the Brackenridge graduate was arrested Wednesday night in Chicago for allegedly attempting to set up a drug distribution network.
“To be fair, we would like people not to speculate and just wait for facts,” Jawanda Newsome told the Express-News. “We need to see what the outcome is. He has a lawyer. I hope San Antonio doesn’t lose its trust in Sam. We are praying for a positive outcome, because we don’t yet know hard-core facts either.”
According to the Associated Press, Hurd was in jail Thursday after he allegedly agreed to buy a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover agent.

Citing a federal complaint, Hurd was arrested Wednesday night after meeting with the agent at a Chicago restaurant. According to the complaint, Hurd told the agent he was interested in buying five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute.
Hurd allegedly told the agent “his co-conspirator is in charge of doing the majority of the deals” while he focused on higher-end deals, the Associated Press reported. Hurd allegedly said he could pay for the kilogram of cocaine after “he gets out of practice” then walked out of the restaurant with the package and was arrested.
Hurd, 26, played five season for the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Bears in free agency this summer. In 12 games this year, he has eight catches for 109 yards.
Hurd participated in several charitable ventures while with the Cowboys and he held a summer youth football camp in town for several years. He often publicly professed to being a Christian and talked often in interviews about his reliance on God.
